As is the case in much of Africa, cultural and religious factors in Cameroon have proved formidable obstacles to the advancement of women in the workplace. Traditional beliefs dictate that a women’s place is in the home, prompting many parents to take their daughters out of school at an early age – and allow them to be married. This sounds like a great program for women! Ever since patriarchy replaced matriarchy and women became second class citizens (or worse), they and their children have been subjected to abuse by men, and in many countries live like slaves. This has to change, and it will as the world becomes more educated and people begin to understand that patriarchy is the source of most of our world problems.
