Johan L. Tønnesson har med sin doktoravhandling ønsket å stimulere til økt refleksjon innad i historikermiljøet om hvordan gode fagtekster kommuniserer med omverdenen. Tønnesson ønsker å bidra med kunnskap om hva som skal til for å skape god sakprosa.

Vitenskap er ikke noe som bare skal formidles, i betydningen transporteres til publikum som et ferdig produkt. Den gode vitenskapelige teksten skal stimulere til skaperkraft hos alle nysgjerrige lesere. Virkelig resepsjon kommer først i gang når mennesker legger til sin egen stemme. For at en vitenskaplig artikkel eller bok skal kunne fungere etter sin hensikt, må skaperen av teksten alltid ha for øye at den også må oppleves relevant for hans medskapende lesere.

Hvis forfatteren legger for sterk vekt på å sensurere bort sine egne motforestillinger og motstemmer, mangler de synlige sporene av kommunikasjon i teksten. Fraværet av vilje til å føre en samtale med seg selv, og dermed potensielle lesere, gjør at det skrevne ord oppfattes som lukket og utilgjengelig. >> les mer
