3rd Global Conference: Pluralism, Inclusion and Citizenship (Salzburg, Austria)

Friday 16th November – Sunday 18th November 2007, Salzburg, Austria

With this inter- and multi-disciplinary project we seek to explore the new developments and changes of the idea of pluralism and the implications those have for social and political processes of inclusion and citizenship in contemporary societies. The project will also assess the larger context of major world transformations, for example, new forms of migration and the massive movements of people across the globe, as well as the impact and contribution of globalisation on tensions, conflicts and the sense of acceptance, rootedness and membership.

14th Nordic Migration Researchers Conference

14.-16. november 2007, Bergen (Norway)

The Nordic Migration Researchers Conferences have established themselves as a major contact point not only between Nordic researchers in the field of international migration and ethnic relations, but also between these and international scholarship generally.

The theme for the Nordic Migration Researcher Conference points to issues of sovereignty, demarcation, distinction, exclusion and discrimination, but also to issues of transience, communication across distinction, and acceptance. Aspects of ‘the global turn’ and the Europeanization of Europe, not least as manifest in migration and migrant populations, have brought border and boundary issues to the forefront not only in social science and humanities scholarship, but also placed them with exceptional prominence on the political agenda.

”Indigenous Peoples – Migration and Urbanisation” (Tromsø)

University of Tromsø on October 18th – 19th 2007.

This year’s conference will focus on aspects of migration and urbanisation. We have asked for papers that will trace the reasons for migration, including push factors that range from poverty to forced eviction, and pull factors such as access to education and new economic opportunities. We also focus on urban living conditions and the basis for social and political organisation.

Central in the Indigenous struggle has been the close ties to the land and the quest for control over traditional territories. Still, an increasing number of Indigenous people live outside their traditional land and/or derive their means of livelihood from sources other than customary land use. A central question will then be to explore how indigenous identity is expressed and maintained in new urban settings. The speakers will in different ways address the questions above.

The conference languages will be English, Spanish and Sami.
