Gift economies and open source software: Anthropological reflections

Building on Eric Raymond’s work this article discusses the motivation and rewards that lead some software engineers to participate in the open source movement. It is suggested that software engineers in the open source movement may have sub-groupings which parallel kinship groups such as lineages. Within such groups gift giving is not necessarily or directly reciprocated, instead members work according to the ‘axiom of kinship amity’ – direct economic calculation is not appropriate within the group. What Bourdieu calls ‘symbolic capital’ can be used to understand how people work in order to enhance the reputation (of themselves and their group). >> continue (pdf) (Link updated 12.4.2021)

Indigenous Russians Unite Against Oil and Gas Development

Despite their small numbers, the Sakhalin aborigines are standing up to multinational energy companies that are developing oil and gas deposits on the island. On March 25-26, representatives of the Nivkh, Orok, Evenk, and Nanai peoples of Sakhalin held a congress in the town of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Roughly 3,000 indigenous people make up about 0.5 percent of the island’s total population.

The indigenous congress created a council which will represent the island’s indigenous population in negotiations with the oil companies and Russian government authorities. The council will advocate for an ethnographic study to assess the cultural impact of the oil and gas projects on indigenous peoples.

The new Shell pipeline is being constructed over a sacred Nivkh burial ground. The noise from the construction has impacted the caribou population and driven herders away from their traditional grazing grounds. The new Shell drilling platform and the pipeline connecting it to the shore is due to be constructed near the key feeding area of the endangered western pacific gray whale. >> continue

Rett for samer og nordmenn

Samiske rettigheter til land og vann i Finnmark er i det vesentlige et rettsspørsmål og ikke et politisk spørsmål. De rettigheter som er opparbeidet fra samisk side gjennom lang tids bruk, kan ikke endres gjennom politiske vedtak. Det må i tilfelle skje gjennom ekspropriasjon og erstatning. Meget av debatten omkring Finnmarksloven – som nå går langs mange sidespor – tar ikke hensyn til dette grunnleggende forhold.

Den sjøsamiske kulturen langs kysten er like viktig for samefolket som reindriftssamenes kultur. Men sjøsamene ble langt hardere rammet av hundre års fornedrende fornorskningspolitikk. Samene langs fjord og kyst har derfor et minst like sterkt behov for kulturvern som innlandssamene. >> les mer

Internett, muslimer, Vestens irrasjonalitet og antropologenes ansvar

I mandagsseminaret av forskningsprogrammet Kulturell kompleksitet i det nye Norge ved UiO kunne vi høre et foredrag av antropologen Lenie Brouwer fra Universitetet i Amsterdam. Hun har gjort feltarbeid på en internettkafe og ungdomsklubb og fortalte om situasjonen for muslimer etter drapet på filmmakeren Van Gogh. Hun tegnet et ganske dystert bilde, men kunne også fortelle om at internett og rap blir brukt for å uttrykke og motivirke frustasjon blant muslimske ungdommer. På grunn av diskrimineringen er islam blitt viktigere for ungdommenes identitet og ungdommene føler et sterkere bånd til muslimer andre steder i verden enn før.

“Debatten om integrering dreier seg først og fremst om islam”, kritiserte antropologen. Mange antropologer forsker på islam og integrering. Er det kanskje slik at antropologer på den måten reproduserer og opprettholder slike skjevheter, kunne en høre i samtaler etter seminaret. At muslimhetsen er overdrevet og blir misbrukt er et av poengene i teksten The Islamophobia Myth av Kenan Malik. Kanskje det er nødvendig å flytte fokuset bort fra muslimene (og andre såkalte “andre”) og over til majoritetsbefolkningen? Antropologen Brigt Dale viste engang til en interessant artikkel av antropologen Tim Ingold om Vestens irrasjonelle forhold til “de andre” (link oppdatert) og en kan også nevne Edward Saids klassiker Orientalisme. Temaet er kanskje flere studier verdt?
