Vor 100 Jahren: Maji-Maji-Krieg in “Deutsch-Ostafrika”

Vor hundert Jahren wurde ein besonders blutiges Kapitel der Kolonialgeschichte Europas geschrieben, das heute ziemlich in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Die einheimische Bevölkerung des heutigen Tansania – damals “Deutsch-Ostafrika” – erhob sich gegen ihre deutschen Besatzer. Zwei Jahre dauerte der ungleiche Kampf, bei dem vermutlich 100.000 Einheimische getötet wurden – aber nur 15 Europäer.

Ein soeben erschienenes Buch geht den Geschehnissen in Afrika zum 100. Jahrestag des Beginns des Maji-Maji-Krieges nach, das von der Historikerin Felicitas Becker und dem Ethnologen Jigal Beez herausgegeben wurde. Der Maji-Maji-Krieg war “die erste antikoloniale Erhebung, bei der sich viele unterschiedliche Völker – insgesamt etwa 20 – gemeinsam gegen die Kolonialherrschaft zur Wehr setzten”, so Jigal Beez in seinem Buchbeitrag.

Von Beginn an geprägt war das Verhältnis von einem absoluten Überheblichkeitsgefühl der weißen Kolonialherren gegenüber den Afrikanern. Gerechtfertigt wurden damit Landenteignung, körperliche und psychische Gewalt, Zwangsarbeit auf Plantagen und – last but not least – auch die Einhebung von Steuern. >> weiter

Islam Is Gaining a Foothold in Chiapas / Red Alert in Chiapas

Long a bastion of Catholicism, southern Mexico is quickly turning into a battleground for soul-savers. Islam, too, is gaining a foothold and the indigenous Mayans are converting by the hundreds. “In Islam, race plays no role,” Anastasio Gomez, a Tzotzil Mayan from Mexico, says joyously. His enthusiasm is understandable. After all, in his home state of Chiapas, Mexico’s poorest, the indigenous people are viewed as second class humans, and whites and Mestizos treat the Indian majority as if they weren’t there.

“They see themselves as restorers of Islam,” says the anthropologist Gaspar Morquecho, author of a study of the Muslims of Chiapas. “Their defiance of capitalism is similar in many respects to the critique of globalization espoused by many left-wingers.”

“In Islam, the Indians rediscover their original values,” claims Esteban Lopez, the Spanish secretary general of the Muslim community. “The Christians destroyed their culture.” >> continue
